Appearing once again as febrile as he had been at the start of the game, the Chinese player once again invested a great deal of time in choosing a rather ambitious variation with Black. Hadn’t this finally smiled on him in the opening round of the World Championship? This time, however, Gukesh took advantage of an inaccuracy in his opponent’s calculation on move 18 to secure victory with goldsmith’s precision in handling the pieces, setting the record straight before today’s rest day on Thursday.
