The FIDE Ethics and Discipline Commission (EDC) has announced a 60-day provisional suspension of GM Christopher Yoo, effective from May 09, 2025. This measure follows the filing of a second harassment complaint, currently under preliminary review.

This suspension stems from two separate complaints alleging violations of the FIDE Code of Ethics and Discipline. Case 5/2025 (A), filed by the United States Chess Federation (USCF), and a recent complaint – details of which and the complainant remain confidential due to the sensitivity of the allegations – are both being investigated by the EDC.

The November 14, 2024the USCF had already imposed a one-year suspension on GM Christopher Yoo, prohibiting him from taking part in any tournament under its aegis. This sanction is also accompanied by a five-year probationary period, running until November 14, 2030.

In accordance witharticle 26.12 of the FIDE Charternational sanctions can be extended to the international level if a member federation so requests and if the decision respects fundamental legal principles and the standards of a fair trial. Thus, the USCF has officially requested FIDE to recognize and apply its sanction worldwide, under thearticle 4.15 of the FIDE Code of Ethics. This request is still being examined.

In view of the seriousness of the allegations and the ongoing proceedings, the President of the EDC has decided to impose a temporary suspension on GM Yoo in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation process. Both GM Yoo and the USCF have been officially informed of this decision. The suspension could be extended if no definitive resolution is reached within 60 days.

This decision is part of FIDE’s commitment to protecting all those involved in the world of chess and sends a clear message about the importance of promoting a respectful environment for the entire chess community, regardless of gender, age or status.
